If you remember, our current kitchen cabinets are temporary. Steve will
make our permanent kitchen cabinets with
some of the black walnut we brought with us from our Saginaw trees, but that
may be a few years down the road yet. We purchased some unfinished cabinets
from Menards to use in the meantime (lowers only), and I painted them. These
will be moved to the basement for a craft area one day. Since we didn't want to
spend the additional money on temporary
upper cabinets, but we knew we needed some additional storage in the kitchen,
we decided to use some open shelving. We used some inexpensive brackets with
pine boards. The trick was to get it the shelving up high enough that the screw
holes we needed to make in our tongue and groove pine walls would be covered by
our upper cabinets in the future. Thus, the shelves work fine for me, since I'm
fairly tall. If you're short. . . fugettaboudit!
Here's a peek at the open shelving. First, a shot of the sink side of
the kitchen.

Next, a peek at the stove side of the kitchen. (The outlet high on the wall is for the stainless microwave/exhaust fan combo that will eventually go above the stove.)

. . .all the while trying NOT to reveal too much of the surrounding areas.

Like the open shelves! Good idea for temporary use .. Is that a wood cut out of Michigan I see? Upper AND lower peninsulas?
